Heaven’s Gate Seeks Clothing

Posted by Ken McGuire in Visual Arts

Éigse, Carlow’s arts festival gets underway next month and they’ve got a call out for their Heaven’s Gate project. The project, an ambitious one at that, has involved the creation of an 1890′s mid-western barn / skating ring which will be open to the public for use.

The project’s curator needs to get hold of 100 or so pieces of old-fashioned western clothing for the duration of the project.

So, if you’re involved in the arts or in youth theatre around Carlow and the surrounding counties and you’ve got access to some old-fashioned western clothing that you would be happy to loan the festival for 2-3 months, your costume could help people become part of the stage piece.

In particular, they’re on the look for bowler hats, boater hats, braces, old-fashioned women’s shirts (frilly, buttons, older patterns, etc), scarves that would have been suitable for tying around the head, and men’s (plain) shirts and waistcoats. The clothing would be used by people roller-skating on the stage-art piece and would need to be daily donned and taken off.

If you do think you can help, pop an email to info@eigse.com or call the Carlow Arts Office on 059 9170301 to find out how you can get your costume donations in (you will get them back at the end of the installation).

Disaffection Theatre company are heading back to The Workman’s Club on Wellington Quay, Dublin in ten days time for their third monthly play reading.

Having kicked off at the end of January (taking a break for March given their production of Time’s Tide at New Theatre), Monday 30 April is the date in the diary for the third outing for the company, showcasing “exciting, never before produced, new writing.”

Disaffection’s aim is to tie together new writers – specifically those whose work has not been previously published – and merge them with theatre makers to make new connections, partnerships, discussions, come what may. The lineup for their April readings hasn’t yet been announced but if you want to make a submission for May or June, you can do so by emailing disaffectiontheatre@gmail.com.

Admission on Monday 30th April is free, kick off is 8pm, so if you’re after some new work, stick your head into The Workman’s Club and tell Niamh Moroney I said hello!

KCLR Arts Show #1

Posted by Ken McGuire in Events

And just like, the first arts show on KCLR96FM is in the bag. Done, dusted. Guests gone home, cups in the washer and that’s that. Have I mentioned that I’m the new presenter for The Arts Show on KCLR96FM? Previously hosted by Aisling Moore and more recently by John Keane on Sunday nights, The Arts Show has moved to Tuesday nights at the station (which I think it its old slot) as part of a new evening schedule of specialist programming and yours truly is the new presenter for all things arts and culture happening in Carlow and Kilkenny.

I’ll be keeping some show notes over on the KCLR96FM website, their new online presence due to launch this week (not the red version that you see at the moment) but I’m also going to carry show notes here on Love Arts Culture as well. Nothing like a radio show to kick your blogging into gear!

So, on tonight’s show I spoke to

  • Gillian Daly from Carlow who has organised a charity fundraiser concert at the Seven Oaks Hotel in Carlow this Sunday at 3pm. Gillian leaves for India for the summer to work with Suas. Training in music education, she will also perform at the concert along with a number of full-time students of the Royal Irish Academy of Muisc, the Viva String Ensemble, Carlow Youth and Junior Orchestra, Sing Aloud choir, Aideen O’Hagon School of Ballet senior students and more. Get event details here.
  • Edward Crane, who was in studio to talk about his writing, The Havishams, The Minions Of Mace and writing for children.
  • Anna Galligan, the outreach officer for Barnstorm Theatre Company, who called into studio to chat about their upcoming production of Gormenghast, which opens this Thursday night at The Barn in Kilkenny and
  • Steven O’Rourke of De\Code, Ireland’s new arts & culture magazine which launched with a digital edition earlier this month and heads for print in time for May.

Of course, having your fiancée producing the show makes things a hell of a lot easier. I may hold on to her.

The show has also given me some free reign to pick the music as well – not that there’s a lot you can squeeze into an hour when you’ve got four interviews booked as well but I managed to get some classical music in there courtesy of Richard Clayderman and his Piano Concerto #1 in Bb Minor, Billie Holiday with Solitude (too good a song) and this beauty from Mark Knopfer, taken from his 2009 album, Get Lucky.

Now if only I could get the man himself in studio!

Back on the air next Tuesday night at 8pm. I’m doing some rejigging of the Love Arts Culture page at the minute (said page on Facebook) with the likely result that I’ll park the page and concentrate the output on The Arts Show’s Facebook page.

Pitching for De\Code Issue Two

Posted by Ken McGuire in Writing

, , ,

It’s a short-notice one this, but if you’re interesting in pitching a feature for the second issue of Ireland’s new arts and culture magazine, De\Code, the deadline for pitches is tomorrow morning, Thursday 6 April. I’m working on the magazine as production designer and the first issue was launched yesterday.

You can send pitches to wewilldecode@gmail.com or visit www.wewilldecode.com or De\Code on Facebook for more details. Please include samples of previous work or links to previous work online and take a look at the first edition online to see what type of content lies within. While the first edition was digital only, we’re hoping to see the second edition get a few thousand copies run in print for the end of April (May edition).

On to round two…

Launching De\Code Magazine

I’m delighted that today sees the launch of De\Code magazine, Ireland’s newest arts & culture magazine. The first edition of the magazine is now live online and should be available in print from the May edition (more on that here).

I was asked on board the magazine a few months ago by Steven O’Rourke, who I worked with on the Kilkeny Arts Festival last year and who helms the magazine with James Hendicott and it’s been a great experience to date with much joy coming in seeing the first issue go out the door.

When so magazine magazines are changing and folding, it’s nice to get on the ground level of something new and arts-related which has bucket loads of potential to grow into a really nice magazine.

The first edition contains features on North Korea travel, culinary events in Ireland, the use of alternative spaces for performance, book and music reviews and more. Take a read through the interactive edition above or read it for yourself in Issuu.
